THINGS AREN'T GETTING BETTER ANYMORE
by Sullivan Fall
It used to be my mind was free
From all but sex and irony
But now i'm not so easily relieved
Sleeping on the pull-out bed
Scratching till my skin turns red
Almost want to get up instead of sleeping
Woke up tired and slightly bruised
Pull the curtain 'cause the miracle has been excused
And it isn't all that different from before
But things aren't getting better anymore
Feel too sick to change the side
Maybe i could ... never mind
It almost looked like i almost tried to stand
This may be my last attempt
A sad pretend at merriment
Could all i've done left me as spent as this
Hope it's grey again today
I like my sorrow very heavy on the rain
While i wouldn't say it was okay before
But things aren't getting better anymore
No, i don't need a bruise to know that it hurts
To show that i have never been their first
To believe that it could be worse
All the lives left in the wake
Wait in vain for something good enough to take
I was wrong to say that it was terrible before
'Cause things aren't getting better
Things aren't getting better
Things aren't getting better anymore.

The Misery Since

THE MISERY SINCE
by Sullivan Fall
What's the word still unheard, isolation well-deserved
Birdshit on my shoulder must mean gravity is true
Must be how the blood's still getting through
Late to find a taste for wine
It isn't much but at least it's mine
Over-educated and under-qualified
Still an idiot inside, only fit to slide
While the cold persistence
Of all the misery since
It's been coming down so long
It won't feel wrong
Stuck again with stomach pain, up too late watching purple rain
Tomorrow's gonna wither whether i come down or not
Another rise and set forgot
So here's the trick: you take your pick of alcohol or arsenic
And then if you're still breathing needing shelter from the day
Hide out at the cheapest matinee and hope they'll let you stay
But it's no resistance
To all the misery since
When sadder days prevail
Without fail
But it makes no difference
To all the misery since
After all this time that's passed
It's not the joy that lasts.

Disgusting In Love

DISGUSTING IN LOVE
by Sullivan Fall
You've been off since September
Between moving through weather and finding a cure
There wasn't room for her
Still you're aching for an easy promise
When the end needed action
You dragged out the subtraction in case you could find
A reason you could stay behind
Anything to keep it honest
From the distance that no one crosses
Any suffering goodwill causes
Doesn't count for much
So disgusting in love
You're just like a baby who can't get enough of
All the dancers above who turn in the circles
You want to be part of
Find some courage through drinking
Keeps the good side from thinking and leaves you to cling
To the nearest moving thing
Even though you know it's mostly fever
Me, the genius, not helping
Saving soft one from melting and keeping you dry
From the ones too quick to cry
So it's back down the path of pity
Trail of tears through the love struck city
Just because all the night light's pretty
Doesn't mean it cares
So disgusting in love
You're just like a baby who can't get enough of
All the dancers above who turn in the circles
You want to be part of and to believe in
Now it's better than it was
Since you found one who won't
Crack-up like she does
Who won't turn up because
Of what she thought she saw
What was she thinking of
So disgusting in love.

ORIGINAL FRENCH VERSION
by Sullivan Fall
She said "lose the hat and you might have a chance"
I didn't, i don't, she was gone in a glance
It was back to the same without changing a frame
We play "daddy's drunk", mourn the girls that were lost
In fear of the line that could never be crossed
And if i was hot i'd get out but i'm not
So the best that's left to happen is to be forgot
'Cause when you're happy, fat and dumb
Two out of three's not something
To still be hanging from
Somewhere there's a part of me -- that's the part i'm missing
There wherever i'm supposed to be is the long-lost love scene
And in the original french version lost in time
The gift of life's not such a crime
This life or what's left of it solely depends
On the enduring indulgence of friends
Who cut so much slack that i'll never pay back
And there isn't any promise in another crack
So keep the razor blades and tape
'Cause no amount of shaping
Will lead to an escape
Somewhere there's a part of me -- that's the part i'm missing
There wherever i'm supposed to be is the long-lost love scene
And in the original french version lost in time
The gift of life's not such a crime
All it was was just a phase
(Dans l'original francaise)
There's something more behind the gaze
(Dans l'original francaise)
Now it's all over anyways.

THE DOMESTIC
by Sullivan Fall
Morning missing in record time
A reason waking was lost to find
Almost made it to the floor
Waited through the farm report
So open your eyes in too many tries
A miserable start to wake up the heart
Waste afternoon light taking dark from the white
And everything else is left to grey
You're missing it, you're missing it
You're missing it: what's going by
Open the window and let in some air
It's been too long since any sign of life was there
If life was fair then there would be a day
You wouldn't have to pay to stay out of the way
You're missing it (domestic)
You're missing it (domestic)
You're missing it: what's going by
The world won't stop (you're missing it)
For the cowards who drop (domestic)
The world doesn't stop (you're missing it)
For the cowards who drop.

BELIEVE IN BEING LONELY
by Sullivan Fall
There is a reason for love i have found
It gives the body something to do
Millions of lovers lying around
I'd rather be the miserable few
Don't depend on destiny and i keep no faith in fate
Have no hope for heaven when it won't be worth the wait
But i believe in being lonely
I don't need someone to hold me
Not counting all the one and onlys
Until there's no one left still there but me
Pay off the venus and burn all the charts
Tell the cops to kill the parade
'Cause silly romances get nothing for parts
They're just shoved beneath the bed that's still made
The rooms are always cheaper at the end of lonely street
It only hurts believers when they forget to retreat
But i believe in being lonely
I don't need someone to hold me
Not counting all the one and onlys
Until there's no one left still there but me
Don't need someone to tell me
How i should spend my time
Though i may not have love
What i do have is all mine
And i believe in being lonely
I believe in being lonely
I believe in being lonely
You?

Not Moving Forward

NOT MOVING FORWARD
by Sullivan Fall
Some friends are fighting cancer
Some make money for the ones who have it most
If i could find a girl i'd ask her
Why it is i ever came here from the coast
I know a day is coming
And the sand is getting harder to ignore
But what's the use in fighting now
Since i'm not moving forward anymore
All the old familiar faces
When i cross them, only make me want to run
They ask me what i'm doing
I say "nothing", they say "boy, that must be fun"
But it's hard to keep your humour
When it's too far from the basement to the door
It isn't hard to find me now that i'm not moving forward anymore
Who was first to run back home
Who'll be first to die alone
Idle hands that can't be free
From the grip of atrophy
But hey, it's like i always say
why waste a good shirt on a house day
But it all adds up to nothing
So there isn't any use in keeping score
Just watch the glimmer thin
Beneath the dying skin
Till it's sinking in to settle for
Living with this feeling
Of never moving forward anymore.

THE ONE THAT MAKES US EVEN
by Sullivan Fall
Let's split the difference of opinion
And leave the ill will for the band
Between the jamesons and pilsner
We should be glad that we could even stand
So there's one more hunting season
And only lost a paw or two
But it was always for the same reason
Of monkey see but no can do
It takes one to know one of these parallel misfortunes
Well, at least on that we can agree
So I'll put in the one that makes us even
'Cause i don't want this hanging over my head
Just go into the arms that you want to leave in
And no one has to carry the dead
For every tale lost in confusion
There's a better one untold
Hanging out is no solution
But it still makes the sucker fold
Lost weekend summer for the dilettante and drummer
Drinking since not drinking does no good
So I'll put in the one that makes us even
'Cause i don't want this hanging over my head
Just go into the arms that you want to leave in
And no one has to carry the dead
Still i'll put in the one that makes us even
So you don't have to worry about the cost
History will prove what we can't believe in
Until then we're just the learned lost
I'll put in the one...

VANILLA
by Sullivan Fall
When i go home tonight, i will be alone tonight
According to this history of absent looks and lack of personality
The future isn't hard to see
When the lights come up at one and the letting out has begun
Caught between the shove-off and the faint
Wonder if she's something underneath the paint
A hair shirt for the reluctant saint
And while lovers fix each other in their beds
Other covers hold the cold instead
When you go home tonight, be glad you're not alone tonight
Lying there still sick and tired
Counting down the days until expired
The only fate for the undesired
If it's not luxury, than it's just lechery
To girls who know their destined from their doomed
And guess which ones are groomed
And so another evening ends
Strung out, drunk, and barely hanging on to to your friends
And every song just reminds you you're lonely
If it weren't for alcohol, then there wouldn't be any hope at all
Still you wake up and it's you and you only
Someday you're gonna pay the price
For living without much sugar and spice
It turns a gentleman into a gorilla
And when another one goes by
All that you can do is ask yourself why
Do the girls all seem to smell like vanilla
Why do the girls all smell like vanilla?

All That Is Left No. 1

|

ALL THAT IS LEFT NO. 1
by Sullivan Fall
Is it easier to say that we meant it all this way
Playing everything as dreamed
Though we act like we've arrived after privileges survived
Forget now those years we screamed
So maybe this is best, taking what we find
Dead at thirty-six, safe in bed on time
Since we're old enough to know
What to do and where to go
Leaving nothing to decide
Something worse to be for sure
Than whatever we almost were
Settled in like satisfied
The trouble to be found is coming anyway
Tomorrow could be bad but so could have today
And when our fortune's told, i will be with you
And when we're only old, i will be with you
It can never be too much when all that's left is us
Even if it's true enough
That all that's left is us.
