HOW COULD YOU KNOW?
Words and music by Sullivan Fall ©2009
Did you watch your boyhood friend smash his against the rocks?
Did you see your dear old Dad as he was crushed down on the docks?
Did you lead your drunken mother slowly home for thirty blocks?
If you haven't, how could you know?
Did your sister pick the flowers from the finest homes in town
And sell them on the corner till the coppers shut her down
Did you pull her from the river in a torn-up wedding gown?
If you haven't, how could you know?
It's true enough that every man must face his crimes
And then get up to face the dawn
But the saddest man on earth still smiles
Every time it’s someone else's lawn
Did you hold your lover's hand as she coughed herself from life?
Did you lose your middle finger to a cuckold's rusty knife?
Did you curse the godless ocean when it took another wife?
If you haven't, how could you know?
Did the poetry you swallowed give you nothing to live out?
Did you give yourself to Jesus till he sold you back your doubt?
Did the funerals leave nothing left for you to cry about?
If you haven't, how could you know?
It's true enough that every man must face his crimes
And then get up to face the dawn
But the saddest man on earth still smiles
Every time it’s someone else's lawn.

LAMPS WITHOUT LIGHT
by Sullivan Fall ©2009
We've been indulgent with our pleasures
Living like the cost was not in sight
Giving in to every fashion
Like limbless chairs, lamps without light
Lamps without light
Our happy home was solar powered
Until the payments turned it night
They took the sofa shaped like Buddha
The endless chairs, lamps without light
Lamps without light, Lamps without light
The landlord said he'd fix the water
We'll get paid up but it will be tight
There’s no room enough for fashion
For limbless chairs, lamps without light
Lamps without light, lamps without light.

HEAVEN'S LITTLE ANGEL
by Sullivan Fall ©2009
I'm not known to be a big believer
In anything above me or below
Still i'd like to meet the mind who could conceive her
This little angel that i have been blessed to know
Heaven must be looking for an angel
St. Peter must have let one through the door
Heaven must be missing an angel
'Cause i've never seen a girl like you before
Heaven must be looking for an angel
Have they sent somebody down to bring her home?
Heaven must be missing an angel
'Cause her beauty could inspire a lengthy tome
Her hair, her mouth, her eyes, they are such sacred things
I'm flying through the skies even though she's the one with wings
Heaven must be looking for an angel
After seeing her great smile i'm sure of this
Heaven must be missing an angel
'Cause now i know that angels do exist
Heaven must be looking for an angel
There's a cloud up there that needs her company
Heaven must be missing an angel
Well hey, big guy, your angel's here with me
Hey, big guy, your angel's down here with me.

LIPSTICK LA-LA-LA
by Sullivan Fall ©2009
Daddy's girl wants a taste of the world
Even if it's only just for tonight
Made her escape through the community gates
And it’s off to make herself a sight
Passing time with a twister and lime
It fashions the attraction she craves
Bats her eyes at the scabrous guys
Just like she's seen the queen bees behave
She's fingering the canister out of her purse
And slips it on her lips in the way she had rehearsed
And then the lipstick la-la-la
It's all just fun to such a pretty thing
The lipstick la-la-la
Until it washes off and she wants what tomorrow will bring
Under the din where they negotiate skin
She's losing to the swell of the crowd
But there's a trick that she's seen turn them quick
And she's itching now to do it out loud
So she spots a girl who could take a kiss
And waits for the light and some ghouls to play witness
To the lipstick la-la-la
It's all just fun to such a pretty thing
The lipstick la-la-la
Until it washes off and she wants what tomorrow will bring
And then when she's had her share of fun
Playing on the dark side of the sun
She comes strutting home with a tale and a tan
But the object of her attention
Always knew it was nothing more than acted affection
These party girls all have the same plan
And each one deserves nothing more than a man
Lipstick la-la-la (pretty won't be missed)
Lipstick la-la-la (just ask the girl she kissed)
The girls come down when they want to play
They have their fun then they go away
Lipstick la-la-la (pretty won't be missed)
Lipstick la-la-la (just ask the girl she kissed)
The girls come down when they want to play
They come down here, have their fun, then they go away.

THIS TIME NEXT YEAR
by Sullivan Fall
This time next year I'll probably be here
Scraping the stones left of my hope
If everything is hell, why don't I go hang myself?
The truth is I wouldn't trust the rope
It doesn't get me very far I know
Always looking for somewhere to leave instead of somewhere to go
But nothing comes from nothing and nothing's enough for me
So rain, rain come around wash me out of this dead town
Once you stay you're never found again
April's hard and May will spread but I'm not getting out of bed
For anyone or anything again, there it’s said
This time next year, oh god, if I'm still here
Take the time to take this life
While everyone's in flight, but I'm stuck at every light
Waiting for the next twist of the knife
My technicolor dreams have turned out monochrome
Every song on the radio just sounds like styrofoam
But I still it turn on and listen even though it's like working for free
So rain, rain come around wash me out of this dead town
Once you stay you're never found again
April's hard and May will spread but I'm not getting out of bed
For anyone or anything again, there it’s said
No don't tell me that it will be okay that will only make me stay
So rain, rain come around wash me out of this dead town
Rain, rain, come on down.

PARIS IN TEARS
by Sullivan Fall
Oh my dear Genevieve, please don't you believe
That you are the reason they found me so deep
There was trouble nigh, no time for goodbye
There's a couple of dollars still under the bed
If there was a place where our love could be lost
Far from a road or a train
Have you ever seen Paris in tears?
Everything looks like the rain
I will take with me just your memory
I wanted this like a hole in the head
So forgive me dear that I can not be here
They had their reason but I had your smile
If there was a place where our love could be lost
Far from a road or a train
Have you ever seen Paris in tears?
Everything looks like the rain
It will be hard to forgive a man with one reason to live
But you were that reason and if you weren't there
I would have sunk long ago
If there was a place where our love could be lost
Far from a road or a train
Have you ever seen Paris in tears?
Everything looks like the rain
Everything looks like the rain.

COMING DOWN WITH CHRISTMAS
by Sullivan Fall ©2009
There's something going 'round this time of year
Everybody's coming down with christmas cheer
We try to bear the cold, unwrap the candy gold
And think of all the things we can't afford
The children are expecting some new plunder
While their parents busy keeping up from under
They try to hold their tongues as the stockings are all hung
Once opened then the kids are back to bored
And everybody's coming down with christmas
The sneezing, wheezing king of holidays
Everybody's coming down with christmas
You can catch it in oh so many ways
The cat keeps getting caught up in the tinsel
The car keeps sliding through the streets of snow
Just be glad you're not the turkey in the middle
Oh whatever, where's the rum and mistletoe?
And everybody's coming down with christmas
Even those of us who stay inside
Everybody's coming down with christmas
You can skate away but you can't hide
And everybody's coming down with christmas
Where noses run and cheeks burn red
And everybody's coming down with christmas
This year we'd all calm down instead
This christmas we should all calm down instead.
